Xavier High School Admissions Profile for Parents

Xavier High School has served the young men of the NYC area since its charter in 1861. The school, founded with a mission of sending these young men into the world with ‘grateful hearts to transform the world for God’s greater glory’ has continued to serve since that time, currently representing their 174th class. In 1968 the school became a formal Military Institute, offering credit toward Senior ROTC advancement. However the JROTC program became optional only three years later. Xavier is now a part of the Jesuit Schools Network and part of the National Catholic Education Association.

College Placement Program

All students are automatically placed on a college prep course throughout their education at Xavier High School and will complete courses required to enter into the college of their choice. Advanced courses, including Advanced Placement and Honors, are part of this process for those students who elect to take them.

In order to prepare students for college, each is given the ability to meet with and work with a college counselor to help them choose the right fit when it comes to the college they will attend after leaving Xavier. Counselors are encouraged to work with students to choose the proper college based on fit and their individual needs rather than one that has a high profile name or any level of prestige.

Students begin meeting with a guidance counselor in their freshman year to prepare them for their college entrance throughout the course of their education. There is also a career exploration series offered to help students learn about different types of careers that are available to them and how Xavier can help them to achieve those careers (source).

Xavier High School Admissions Process

Applying for Xavier High School starts with an online application which must be completed according to a strict deadline each year.

Students must also submit transcripts. Teacher recommendations are recommended but not required. If included, it must be at least one recommendation from a teacher in a core subject area. The other recommendation must be an educational source however it is allowed to be a principal, school counselor, coach, pastor, or other educational support person.

Higher Achievement Program (HAP)

HAP is a free five week summer course for seventh graders going into eighth grade which prepares students for the TACHS and Xavier High School Admissions. Xavier says, “HAP is committed to serving young men from diverse backgrounds and means and is devoted to serving students from at-risk populations. HAP will prioritize the acceptance of applicants who are most in need and who will stand to benefit from attending the program.” Application, essay, report card, and two letters of recommendation are due by mid April, a few months before HAP starts.

Taking the TACHS as Entrance Exam for Xavier

The school requires that students who wish to apply complete an entrance examination, though there are several choices available. Students may take the TACHS, SSAT, ISEE, or HSPT to gain admission. With each of these exams Xavier must be listed as a choice (if applicable) and information must be sent to the school directly through the testing facility.

One of the best ways to improve your score is to take practice tests. The student can become much more familiar with the material and format. This will eliminate surprises on test day. You can signup for an TACHS Practice Exam between April and November. Earlier, we start with slightly easier exams than that to build students up to the difficulty. Check our full schedule of practice exams if no tests are available below. You may also be interested in a comparison between the TACHS and HSPT.

Taking the Xavier High School Scholarship Exam

Students can take the Regis Exam, Fordham Prep Scholarship Exam, or St. Peter’s Scholarships exam (which are all the HSPT) and have their scores sent to Xavier for scholarship consideration. Scholarship exams are in person, even at the height of the pandemic. They have limited availability for the first 150 students.

This is an extremely difficult exam which gives very little time per question. It tests students heavily in math, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and a range of other assorted skills. Much more info can be found at our comparison between the TACHS and HSPT. Practice is paramount for an exam like the HSPT as many students score very poorly on their first attempt but improve over time.

Prep for the Xavier High School Admissions Process

If you’re looking to get into Xavier High School or to get your son into Xavier you want to make sure you start early. Make sure that they are getting academically prepared during their middle school years so that their academic achievements will help them gain admission. We can help your son get ready for Xavier High School admissions process, prep for the entrance and scholarship exams, and optimize his grades during their 6-8 grade years so that he can get the largest offer for the school best for him.

Tutoring will allow them to fully prepare for the potentially grueling process of getting into Xavier and excelling within this academic environment. All material he will learn is cumulative and will allow a strong foundation to be built upon it.

As someone who earned scored in the 99th percentile on these exams and earned full scholarships to all high schools I applied, I know the preparation and commitment it takes to succeed in getting into a private high school. My tutoring team offers group and private tutoring sessions to boost your students’ academic performance and self-confidence for the rigorous private high school admissions season.

Prep Overlaps with Other Private High Schools

If you want your son to attend Regis but he falls a little short, Xavier is almost an identical Jesuit, all boys school except everyone who goes does not earn a full scholarship. This and the resulting pool of students is the main difference. Other private high schools in Manhattan you may also consider are Loyola School NYC, Xaverian in Brooklyn, Dalton, and Stuyvesant. There are other all boys schools in Manhattan that you may also consider. Many schools share identical preparation and have identical tests. The nuances of their admissions processes vary, but we can answer any questions you have about these. More information on other high schools and exams in NYC

Individual and Group Tutoring Sessions

My students have earned admission some of the most prestigious schools in the country, including Regis, arguably the most prestigious high school in the country. I work with students to improve their academics to make sure they achieve success in their exams and beyond, even when they already excel. My students have also earned large scholarships to high-level schools, earning over $12.8 million in financial assistance through merit based scholarships with 42 students passing the rigorous Regis exam. In addition, students I tutored have earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to Xavier with countless others earning admissions to Xavier High School. I also have 4 cousins who graduated from Xavier.

John Zaborskis tutored students to help them earn over $1,500,000 in scholarships to Xavier High School NYC since 2015.

In 2022, John’s students earned a combined total of over $3.8 million in scholarships to high school.

Most students take a TACHS or HSPT practice test before their first lesson to identify areas of improvement and potentially group similar students with similar goals. We also use this to compare to future practice tests to determine what is working and what isn’t. Call, text, or email us to discuss the best options for your daughter including individual one-on-one tutoring or in a group. Online group sessions have rolling starts year round. You can view availability for groups and tutoring at Book Me.
